santafenewmexican > Smoky sunset
The setting sun breaks through a thick cloud of smoke on Thursday. The smoke was the result of a prescribed burn in the Jemez Mountains in the Santa Fe National Forest. After successfully burning 1,250 acres on Wednesday, fire crews on Thursday, Oct. 18, reignited and burned off 5,750 acres of vegetation in a path around the southeastern and western perimeter of the San Juan burn area to create a blacklined buffer. Smoke from the San Juan prescribed fire is expected to drift southeast of the burn area. Smoke will be visible from La Cueva, Jemez Springs, Cañon, Ponderosa, Jemez Pueblo, San Ysidro, Zia Pueblo, Bernalillo, Rio Rancho and areas off of Interstate 25 and N.M. 550. For a smoke forecast, visit http://inciweb.org/incident/3297/. For more information on how to minimize health impacts from smoke, contact the New Mexico Department of Health at 888-878-8992 or visit http://nmhealth.org/eheb/airQ.shtml.
